Bill Landry is the master of his home and land. He’s never faced anything that he couldn’t crush beneath his wide size twelves or put down with a shot from his rifle. Nobody crosses Bill, including his wife Martha.

Of course, she doesn’t have much choice, especially when a hunting accident leaves him home-bound and full of rage. He’s becoming more vicious by the day, turning on her and anyone else who ventures too close to their mountain home. She’s trapped there with him, and the more deranged he grows, the more she’s sure she’ll never get out of that valley alive.

I'm not really sure how to feel about this one. It wasn't quite what I was expecting. I figured it would be about a man mentally abusing his wife...and it was but some things didn't add up for me. For example, the psychologist and the doctor had different opinions about which one was mentally off but neither one seemed to be in any hurry to help. When Katie realized Martha was the one needing help and needed to get away from her abusive husband, she didn't insist on getting the doctor to intervene, instead she acted like some vapid, giggling teenager when he said he couldn't get away. Are they the only two people on the planet? Call social services or the police! I also had trouble with the ending. She does what she does and there's no mention of what would surely be an investigation. She gets away with it (battered wife syndrome would surely fit here) with no consequences? We never know because it never says. Not a bad book but not a great or even good one.

The Good Wife A Rural Noir edition by JD Salyers Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

It was a ok book. Not much to it. Kept reading to see if something major was gonna happen and it never did
I could barely finish this book as I found it so sad and depressing. The old man was so mean and vicious and the wife
such a doormat!
Very good, well written story. Got 4 stars because there was no explanation of her sentence. But I really enjoyed the book and the characters.
I liked the build up of tension between the couple, it's eerie. The story keeps you interested throughout. And the ending was a nice twist. I liked the feeling of pending doom the writer made throughout the story.
This is a really good read....one that brings out all kinds of emotions...anger at the husband....anger at the wife for not taking care of the old horses ass in the first place!! Recommended!
This story was nothing like what I expected. I was frustrated with the wife through most of the tale, and I often wanted to smack the doctor. But still, there was no putting this story down! And the ending... well, I never saw it coming. I just wish the characters were a little more developed. Recommended read!
This story was very depressing. Not in a horrible bad way but the poor wife was so pitiful and everyone seemed so quick to dismiss her. I wish her darn son had done more and that the darn doctor wasn't so blind and oblivious as to what was going on. I enjoyed the ending, it was quite rewarding and satisfying, because I would have been disappointed after reading this story and it had ended any other way. I expected the story to be a little more suspenseful in a different way and that is why I gave it four stars, if I could I would have given it 3.5. I think old pops there could have been a little bit creepier!
