Anybody who likes COPS will want to read these short, well-written dispatches from the front-- and you should. COPS has inadvertently misled us. These are the stories that COPS couldn't tell because they were too awful, too violent and bloody, or simply about cases that, like most cases in the barrio and the hood, go unsolved. They're particularly full of important insights into the psychology of gangbangers and the structure of the growing Latino gang problem. On TV they'd draw protests, I think, for being "unbalanced" about equally real Latino achievements, and his obvious sympathy for the people trapped in gang life would not save him. I tried to put my finger on what else was odd about the stories, as I kept reading. I finally realized I had come to expect the cops to have intense friendships with each other. Instead, the picture that emerges is much closer to life in any office. They're normal people working for a living, albeit at a violent and depressing job. Their bosses seem to know as much about what happens on the street as Dilbert's boss knows about what the engineers are doing in the cubicles. The stories are told by a Serpico-like narrator who is an idealist, driven to write by his frustration. These stories are a valuable experience, and the next time I teach American lit, I'm going to assign them.Product details

StreetCreds 2nd edition Zach Fortier Blue Harvest Creative 9780615849478 Books Reviews
I was really looking forward to reading Streetcreds. I had read Curbchek and enjoyed it immensly.
Fortier continues painting the picture that he started in his first book. This time however the focus is more on his years in the gang task force, which he only touched on previously. He also goes deeper into detail on some of the incidents that he first introduced in his previous book. At first I wasn't sure how to take the repeating of some of the stories. The more I thought on it though, the repetition makes sense. Curbchek was his experiences as a whole while in law enforcement, Streetcreds is specifically his experiences in and with the gang unit, as well as the gangs that they interacted with. It also draws a painful portrait of a man whose daily interactions with the community he served permanently skewed how he saw the world around him. (If you're still concerned about it, don't worry it's only a few stories, and not the majority of the book, so it doesn't take away from the book)
Streetcreds is also darker than it's predessesor. There are fewer laugh out loud moments, and more that were just heart-wrenching. Again I think this is due to how these experiences affected him and that he is trying to communicate that to the reader. But once again Fortier lifts the viel that seperates the average day person from a world that is dangerous and a lot closer than they realize. He also shows how not everyone who is involved is stupid or strung out.How the gang world is evolving and changing. And even how those who refuse to acknowledge the darker side of sociotys existance aren't immune to it's touch.
I think wether or not you read the first book, you will still enjoy Streetcreds. It's fast paced and there are some great insights in it into the world of gangs and the people who are trying to control them.
Definitely worth picking up.
the issues explored in this book are child abuse, the sociology and culture of street gang--organizational diagnosis if you will allow, the author is relating his experiences of a highly stressful calling, how his own unhappy childhood affected his approach to it. The author reveals a lot of himself and his idealist view of how police department should be operating. He has a perverse advantage over most of us--he accepts death as a possible outcome of any dangerous situation but does not seem to include his death in the equation of his decision making. He writes from the heart of stress disorder caused by a strong sense of betrayal by the institution he was part of. He finds admirable traits in the adversaries in contrast to the disagreeable traits he sees in most of his fellow officers. He apparently grew up with little sense of what normal is and sees normal positive behavior where he does not expect it--gangs --and normal negative behavior in police where he expects better. An outsider in both worlds, observing tor the rest of us. I really like his courage and writing.
